The Seven Golf Courses
Desert Mountain's golf program is the community's defining distinction. The six Jack Nicklaus Signature championship courses, Renegade, Cochise, Chiricahua, Geronimo, Apache, and Outlaw, each play differently and each takes its name from a mountain range visible from its fairways. Renegade, the first to open, climbs through boulder fields with dramatic elevation changes. Chiricahua is widely regarded as the most scenic, threading through native desert with minimal disturbance to the terrain. The seventh course, No. 7, is a par-54 short course designed for accessibility and social play, with its own contemporary clubhouse outfitted as a gastropub with collapsible glass walls opening to the desert. Golf memberships are available only to property owners and require club board approval.

Schools Serving Desert Mountain: A Multi-District Community
Desert Mountain is a multi-district community. Because the 85262 zip code spans portions of two different school district boundaries, a buyer's school assignment depends on the specific street address of the property being purchased, not simply the community name or village. Buyers with school-age children should verify district and school assignment with the applicable district directly before making any enrollment decision.
Most Desert Mountain addresses fall within Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD #48), served by the Desert Mountain Learning Community. Some properties in the northern and western portions of the 85262 zip code, particularly those closer to Cave Creek and Carefree, may fall within Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD #93). The distinction matters significantly, as the two districts offer different schools, programs, and attendance boundaries.
Scottsdale Unified School District: The Desert Mountain Learning Community
For most Desert Mountain residents, the relevant public schools are part of SUSD's Desert Mountain Learning Community: Anasazi Elementary School (PreK-5), Mountainside Middle School (grades 6-8), and Desert Mountain High School (grades 9-12). These three schools form a complete and vertically integrated International Baccalaureate pathway from elementary through high school, the only complete PreK-12 IB continuum in SUSD.
Anasazi Elementary School is an IB World School authorized for the Primary Years Programme (PYP), emphasizing inquiry-based learning, international mindedness, and a Spanish language component for all students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The campus sits on 15 acres abutting the south trailhead of the McDowell Mountain Park Preserve.
Mountainside Middle School offers the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), a rigorous two-year framework that prepares students for the Diploma Programme at the high school level. The school has been recognized as an IB World School and serves as the natural bridge between Anasazi's PYP program and Desert Mountain High School's Diploma Programme.
Desert Mountain High School (grades 9-12) is ranked number one among high schools in Scottsdale by U.S. News and World Report and is the only SUSD high school offering the full IB Diploma Programme, which the district has housed there since 1999. The school also offers robust Advanced Placement and Career and Technical Education programs through a partnership with the East Valley Institute of Technology, as well as dual enrollment courses through Maricopa Community Colleges. The school carries an Arizona Department of Education A rating, enrolls approximately 2,000 students, and maintains a four-year graduation rate above 95 percent. In the 2024-25 school year, the football program won the AIA 5A State Championship.
Cave Creek Unified School District: Applicable to Some Addresses
A smaller portion of Desert Mountain addresses, primarily in the community's outermost northern villages and those nearest to the Carefree Ranch area, may be assigned to Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD #93). CCUSD serves students through Black Mountain Elementary, Lone Mountain Elementary (a STEAM school), Horseshoe Trails Elementary (a National Blue Ribbon School), Sonoran Trails Middle School (a World Language School of Excellence), and Cactus Shadows High School, which offers AP, IB, and CTE programs and has been recognized consistently among Arizona's top 10 comprehensive high schools. Buyers whose properties fall within CCUSD will find a similarly strong academic environment with different campuses and programs.
School boundary information is provided for general informational purposes only. Desert Mountain sits within two school district boundaries: Scottsdale Unified School District (#48) and Cave Creek Unified School District (#93). Enrollment eligibility must be verified by specific property address through the applicable district. Proximity to a school or community does not guarantee enrollment. Buyers with school-age children are strongly encouraged to verify their specific school assignment with SUSD at susd.org or CCUSD at ccusd93.org before making an enrollment decision.
Buying Luxury Real Estate in Carefree
Carefree attracts a mix of primary residence buyers and second-home purchasers. For primary residence buyers, the appeal is typically the combination of desert privacy, low density, proximity to Scottsdale dining and retail, and the quality of CCUSD schools. For second-home and seasonal buyers, Carefree offers a genuinely distinct retreat quality that differentiates it from the more active resort markets to the south.
Working with Jeff Hernandez means having a buyer's representative who evaluates transaction documents with the trained perspective of a licensed attorney. Jeff reads contracts, addendums, and disclosure packages with the analytical discipline developed over more than 30 years of legal practice, applying that perspective to every offer and closing condition. His knowledge of Carefree's individual communities, from Cow Track Estates to Carefree Ranch, allows him to advise on value, positioning, and off-market opportunities with precision.
For buyers considering gated or deed-restricted communities, Jeff's background in contract analysis is particularly relevant. CC&R packages, HOA disclosures, and custom home contingencies in communities like Carefree Ranch require careful reading. Jeff brings that reading to every file.
Selling Your Carefree Luxury Home
Carefree's luxury market rewards sellers who position carefully. The town's relatively limited inventory and distinct identity within the North Scottsdale corridor mean that buyers considering Carefree have usually already made a lifestyle decision. Effective selling in this market requires reaching those buyers, wherever they are.

RETSY's platform combines professional photography, cinematic video, and digital marketing to present properties at the level the Carefree luxury market demands.
Connie Colla, Branch Manager of RETSY's North Scottsdale office and founder of The Connie Colla Group, brings deep brokerage leadership to every transaction. The team's combined reach, local knowledge, and commitment to precision at each stage of a transaction are what distinguish selling with The Connie Colla Group.
Jeff brings 30-plus years of legal experience to contract analysis, reviewing seller disclosures, addendums, and buyer requests with the perspective of a licensed attorney. Sellers who want a representation model built on substance, not just marketing, will find that combination meaningful.
