Scottsdale Adventures: Best Outdoor Activities for Kids

With its sunny weather and family-friendly atmosphere, Scottsdale is a paradise for outdoor fun. Whether your kids love exploring nature, splashing in water, or playing at the park, Scottsdale offers a variety of exciting activities to keep them entertained. As a Realtor® who has lived and worked in Scottsdale for more than 35 years and knows this vibrant community's ins and outs, I’m thrilled to share my top recommendations for outdoor activities that kids—and parents—will love.

1. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

This beloved Scottsdale park is a must-visit for families. Kids can ride the miniature train, explore the carousel, and enjoy the shaded playgrounds. The park also features picnic areas and seasonal events like concerts and holiday light displays. It's a great opportunity to bring smiles to your kids' faces. 

2. Butterfly Wonderland

Although it is set indoors, this "rainforest" offers an outdoor feel with thousands of butterflies fluttering freely. Through interactive exhibits, kids can walk among these beautiful creatures and learn about their life cycle.  It's a great experience. 

3. McDowell Sonoran Preserve

Introduce your kids to Scottsdale’s stunning desert scenery with a family-friendly hike at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Trails like Gateway Loop and Bajada Nature Trail are easy enough for young explorers, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and unique desert plants.

4. AZ Boardwalk

This entertainment district is packed with family-friendly attractions, including the OdySea Aquarium and Pangaea: Land of the Dinosaurs. The outdoor areas feature fountains and play spaces, making it a fun day out for kids of all ages. And only minutes away, kids can enjoy an evening of jousting at Medieval Times or a day of swimming and watersliding at the Great Wolf Lodge.

5. Chaparral Park

Chaparral Park offers something for everyone, including a splash pad, large playgrounds, jogging and bike paths, and open spaces for picnics and games. The adjacent lake is perfect for feeding ducks or enjoying a peaceful stroll. And don't forget the fishing!

6. Arizona Canal Trail

Rent bikes or scooters and explore the Arizona Canal Trail. This flat, scenic path is ideal for families and offers plenty of spots to stop and take in the beautiful Scottsdale views.

7. Scottsdale Civic Center Park

With its lush green lawns, fountains, and art installations, this park is perfect for a relaxed family outing. Kids will love running around the open spaces or spotting sculptures like the famous "LOVE" statue.

8. Pinnacle Peak Park

This scenic trail is an excellent way to introduce older kids to hiking. The moderate trail offers stunning desert views and a chance to learn about local flora and fauna.
