America’s Happiest Cities in 2026 and What They Get Right
Once again, Scottsdale, Arizona, ranks at the top of the largest U.S. cities. In its 2026 report, WalletHub analyzed 182 of the largest U.S. cities across 29 factors tied to daily living, grouping them into emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment. The results placed Fremont, California at the top, followed by Bismarck, North Dakota, with Scottsdale, Arizona coming in third.
From my perspective as both a Realtor and an attorney, rankings like this can help you focus your thinking on what truly supports your lifestyle and long-term satisfaction. Here's a list of the top 10 happiest cities in America:
Top 10 Happiest Cities in America (2026)
Not every top-10 city ranked highly for the same reason. This table shows each city’s total score and how it performed across the three weighted categories that shaped the final ranking.
| Rank | City | Total Score | Well-Being Rank (50 pts) |
Income & Employment Rank (25 pts) |
Community & Environment Rank (25 pts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fremont, CA | 74.09 | 1 | 89 | 4 |
| 2 | Bismarck, ND | 73.11 | 5 | 23 | 1 |
| 3 | Scottsdale, AZ | 71.36 | 11 | 14 | 2 |
| 4 | South Burlington, VT | 70.15 | 4 | 9 | 48 |
| 5 | Fargo, ND | 69.36 | 12 | 33 | 5 |
| 6 | Overland Park, KS | 68.45 | 2 | 55 | 68 |
| 7 | Charleston, SC | 68.44 | 17 | 10 | 3 |
| 8 | Irvine, CA | 67.99 | 8 | 39 | 32 |
| 9 | Gilbert, AZ | 67.96 | 14 | 27 | 6 |
| 10 | San Jose, CA | 67.79 | 7 | 45 | 42 |
Note: With the exception of “Total Score,” all of the columns in the table above depict the relative rank of that city, where a rank of 1 represents the best conditions for that metric category.
A quick pattern stands out: some cities led because of stronger well-being scores, while others stood out for community strength or a more balanced performance across all three categories.
What the Happiest Cities Have in Common
The highest-ranked cities seem to share a few patterns.
First, they score well on lifestyle and health-related signals. WalletHub’s framework includes indicators tied to mental and physical well-being, which helps explain why happiness is about more than just earning power.
Second, stable income still matters. WalletHub notes research suggesting income increases happiness up to around $75,000 per year, but beyond that point, the effect becomes less dramatic.
Third, time matters. Commute time, work hours, and leisure time all shape daily life. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Americans aged 15 and over spent an average of 5.07 hours per day on leisure and sports activities in 2024.
That may be one of the biggest lessons here: happiness often looks less like status and more like balance.
Why Scottsdale Ranked So High
For Arizona readers, Scottsdale’s position near the top is especially notable.
WalletHub ranked Scottsdale No. 3 overall. It also ranked Scottsdale No. 11 in emotional and physical well-being, No. 14 in income and employment, and No. 2 in community and environment. Scottsdale also placed No. 3 for sports participation.
That does not mean Scottsdale is perfect or ideal for everyone. No market is.
What it does suggest is that Scottsdale performs well in several areas people care deeply about, including lifestyle quality, recreation, community strength, and economic stability. From a luxury real estate perspective, that helps explain why Scottsdale continues to attract buyers seeking more than a beautiful home. They are often looking for a better overall rhythm of life.
How Buyers and Sellers Can Use Happiness Rankings Wisely
The best way to use a ranking like this is as a starting point.
For buyers, it helps to ask:
- Does this city fit my daily routine?
- Does it support the lifestyle I want?
- Does it feel sustainable, not just exciting?
For sellers, quality of life matters too. Buyers are not only evaluating design, finishes, and location. They are also thinking about how life in that area may feel over time.
That kind of context matters even more right now. The World Happiness Report 2025 said the United States fell to 24th place, its lowest-ever position in the report. Gallup also found that 59.2% of U.S. adults expected to have high-quality lives in five years in 2025, the lowest level since it began tracking that measure. The CDC further reported that depression prevalence among people aged 12 and older was 13.1% during August 2021 to August 2023. These statistics are not heart-warming.
That broader picture helps explain why people are thinking more deeply about where and how they want to live.
Final Thoughts
In the end, the happiest cities are not always the biggest, newest, or busiest ones. They are often the places that help people live with more balance, more stability, and less daily friction.
